Init script of postgres is fucked. It doesn't remove /var/lib/postmaster.pid and postmaster is not able to start anymore. Try this:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql stop
rm -f /var/lib/pgsql/postmaster.pid
/etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql start 
/etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql restart 

In my case after restart there is not postgres any more.
