Using default /etc/pam.d/su config file, pam_xauth gives this error:

lip  7 15:22:08 p3 pam_xauth[13519]: _args_init: getlogin failed
lip  7 15:22:08 p3 pam_xauth[13519]: target = source = root(0)

Moving pam_xauth entry before pam_limits entry in /etc/pam.d/su corrects the problem.
