There is unofficial patch, written by Roland Scheidegger, which enables S3TC extension (texture compression) on Radeon cards:

The author says, it probably doesn't infringe any IP rights, as it only pass already compressed textures to GPU (so actually it is DXTn extension). Nevertheless DRI core developers are afraid of (any) legal actions and won't include any S3TC related code, so it would be nice (as always ;) to have it in PLD.
