  Comment: Had the same problem with mustek gsmart2 (usb photo
camera).
If I remember, I had to change the usbcam.console script (it looked for
lockfile in wrong place) AND add my user to proc group. The proc group
has something to do with x permissions on /proc. 

Now all works fine (except usb transfer errors, which are another
subject -- probably gphoto2/mustek interface). 

If permission things go wrong after install-update, I'll post details.
