New task #5622 in evolution: No calendar types available

  If you use evolution-mail prior to installing evolution-calendar and
then install the latter, no default calendar is created and you are
unable to create your own due to no calndar types available. This
renders evolution-calendar useless.

No solution known to date.

Once I managed to create the default calendar by calling "evolution
--force-shutdown" and deleting some of the directory structure in
~/.evolution and ~/.gconf/apps/evolution but this does not seem to work
all the time.
