It's in fact minimal shell, but when writing it had nothing to do with initrd. It seems I was > wrong. :-( Well, to be fair, KDevelop was originally started with other needs in mind. It was originally just a solution for KDE based applications. It, of course, has since grown, and is used all over the place. But one of its /real/ problems is that the project templates it comes with are actually hard-coded into a header file in its source code: http://lists.kde.org/?l=kdevelop&m=94795040008422&w=2 So anytime you want to use KDevelop for something not covered in the templates (such as an SDL app) you will face problems. (Unless you want to recompile KDevelop from source with a tweaked header file). Like I said, after 2.0, they will have this fixed. I can't wait ;-) > > Actually, the packagers that have an even harder time than RPM makers is > > those making DEB packages (since Debian has a very strict file standard > > that most other distros don't have). > > In our distro we have nearly such strict rules as Debian has. The mess > in other RPM distributions is one of reasons why we are doing our own > one. That is a /very/ good thing. I actually gave up RPM based distros a while back because of this (and several other reasons ;-) Are you guys planning on using the new rpm-get scheme? That was another big reason I switched to Debian (automatic package retrieval/updating). It seems like it'll be too hard for some of the *established* (stagnating? ;-) RPM based distros like RH, SuSE and Mandrake to start using it anytime soon... but some of the newer (younger? ;-) RPM based distros could easily do it. Personally.... I like RPMs from a developers standpoint (because they are sooo much easier to make), and DEBs from an end-user standpoint (because I can be so lazy with respect to package management ;-) > That's what i thought. But it would be great to have "very hard" mode, > so adults can also enjoy the game :-). Graphics are cute :-) One of the first things we want to impliment in the 1.x series is gameplay speed/difficulty sliders... So people can tweak the gameplay speed themselves. > > If it's the title-screen, then the problem is actually a X server support > > one. The other solution I have in my mind whould be too much for > this little game (why should there be dependency on OpenGL in it?). > So maybe that's the way it should be :-). Yes, we've thought about OpenGL as well. But you're right... way too many dependancies. Now there has been some talk on the SDL dev mailing list to make an OpenGL 2D target as an option (meaning it would be transparent to the game developers, and optional to the end-users). If they do something like this, then Tux Typing will be ready to use it. And actually, the speed during double-buffering can be greatly increased if you are using a XFree86 4.0 or later, and your hardware is appropriately supported (supports DRI, etc.) But it's funny... My desktop is a 300MHz AMD K6 with a very cheesy ATI Rage Pro card, and yet Tux Typing performs /way/ better on it than on my 500Mhz laptop with a high-performance (for DVD playback) video chipset! -- Sam "Criswell" Hart AIM, Yahoo!: Homepage: < http://www.geekcomix.com/snh/ > PGP Info: < http://www.geekcomix.com/snh/contact/ > Advogato: < http://advogato.org/person/criswell/ > ----- End forwarded message ----- From vancleef at microunity.com Wed Aug 8 19:05:08 2001 From: vancleef at microunity.com (Bob Van Cleef) Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2001 10:05:08 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Automated update/distribution - feature request In-Reply-To: <20010807210023.I3300@nic.gliwice.sdi.tpnet.pl> Message-ID: I've played with both the debian and redhat automated update tools, but they both lack two things that I would love to see. 1 - reporting versions Even though both check the version numbers of the installed and available packages, neigther of them tell you what they found. I'd like at least the ability to select a package and ask what version is installed and what is available. 2 - verification of installation I would love to be able to select a package that is "at the current level" and be able to verify that it is actually installed correctly or that a binary hasn't been corrupted. (sort of a tripwire test, but against the RPM, not a local database) Of the two, dselect is much more informative than up2date. From my perspective, up2date doesn't give you adequate information about what your current state is. It would probably require much more data to be downloaded with poldek's index. If I select all packages, it fails. If I only add: Apache web server + PHP MySQL database server it still fails. Running "installer | more" I see: broken dependencies apache-mod_perl-1.26-1 mysql-bench-3.23.39.-1 mysql-extras-perl-3.23.39-1 (and others) not found php - a bunch of stuff rsynch and others Recommendation: Have installer keep a log so that the output could be reviewed for errors. I have run multiple complete reinstalls, selecting the defaults on everything because of my problems with the package lists last week. Each time, the symptoms are identical. It's not meant for having two different versions of uClibc. Then why use %_kernelsrcdir? Somebody might use /usr/src/linux for kernel hacking, test builds, building kernels for other systems (or anything else) and store proper kernel headers in another directory, e.g. /usr/src/linux-2.4.9. In this case all you have to do is echo '%_kernelsrcdir /usr/src/linux-2.4.9'>>~/.rpmmacros. > I guess it should be always build > with kernel 2.4 headers, for example to enable pivot_root() syscall. Then you should be happy for the change ;-) Even if you use a 2.2 kernel and store its sources in /usr/src/linux, you can force another kernel source directory (even if it's stored not in /usr/src/, but in $HOME). +--------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Unix hackers do it with pipes : Pawe? This spec provides functionality of java 1.3 and probably 1.2 but not i.e. 1.1.x (kafee does). There are java application which will never build or run on 1.1.x and on other side you can still meet apps which require java 1.1.x. When java 1.4 arrives there can be some incopatibilies between 1.3 and 1.4 so I think that adding "Provides: java" is not sufficient and there should be java global version, i.e. "Provides: java1.3" and "Provides: java1.3sdk". You introduced some good changes. I mean java sdk packages should provide java1.3 and java1.3sdk and non sdk packages should provide only java1.3. wrobell -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Our distro is not commercial, we are not selling it and we are not paid for preparing it. We develop PLD only for our own purposes -- to have a consistent set of programs which are used in different environments prepared by us. The main branch of the distribution is available for download from our ftp site as separated packages and as cdrom images as well. Sometimes it is distributed on cdroms included into magazines, but we do not get any money for it, too. We have got also a non-distributable "supported" area. We keep it in CVS repository and it contains software which licenses do not allow to include to the main branch. Is it possible to include resin-cmp into the main branch of our distribution under such circumstances or shall we have it only in "supported" area? It would be glad to have it as a normal package, which would make it easier to download and use since not all PLD users are capable enough to use CVS repository.
