An old version of automake? Try upgrading.

That's PLD's work. It's a minimal shell that contains only the functions
required to parse initrd's startup file. Its use has been obsoleted by bsp
(also our stuff :), which contains a built-in insmod, making the resulting 
initrd even smaller.
