hi,

i would like to know if pld 2.0 is ready to use, and if it is possible
to upgrade from version 1.0 (ra) to 2.0 by using poldek. i would like to
test it on my personal server (now running pld 1.0).

i like pld linux very much, but sometimes i'm afraid of future of
pld linux. there are no security advisories or any other informations about new
packages. last few weeks i was unable to access pld linux web page, but
nobody post any informations into mailing list :-(.
i know, that pld is Polish Linux Distribution but it would by nice to
have at least some news in english language.

Well... there is no 2.0 yet, but quite few people use what is going to

Well... yes.  

Most of us (including myself) are already using 2.0 on their servers and
are satisfied with its stability - even though sometimes you still have
to be carefull when performing an update. 

As for an update. There is a simple shell script called ra2ac that can
be used to ease the migration process a bit (after all, there are many
differences between 1.0 and 2.0).

It is (still) unofficial english translation of our documentation.

That's true. Although we don't release any security advisories, we are
fixing any flaws that are found. We track various security lists in
search for any "news" in that matter.

There are so many new packages build everyday that it would be hard to
create reasonable way of informing users of what's going inside the PLD.
The best method I know, is doing "poldek --up" everyday :)

Ahm, you're right. There were information sent to some lists, but not to
this one. Our mistake.

Well, not exactly. It used to be Polish Linux Distibution some time ago
(more then two years?). Now we are using recursive acronym - PLD stands
for PLD Linux Distribution. 

And as for the news in english. You're absolutetly right. If I have
enough determination, I'll try to work on it after my exams.

Hello,
the most difficult problem is people developing PLD do not
speak English. Of  course, not all of them,  but they also
do not want to use English, because it is simpler to write
the same in Polish.

I've tried  many times  to convince  them to  change their
lazyness, but  without a  success. Maybe your  letter will
help, but I do not think so.

I'm  seeking  for people  who  translate  our homepage  to
English, but people think that it is not their obligation,
I do not know really - why. The only thing they do, as you
can see in previous answers, to criticize other people. It
is Polish national characteristic.

I'm more than willing to write what I can: I do not read polish, but I
can get the idea from poltran, and then write myself. I would love to
help with what little time I have.

Favoring one's native language is a national characteristic everywhere.
Here (in the US) most of all.

So: count me in on helping -- and if others wish to also, let them help.

I see no problem. I alway will to help English speaking users but as you 
maybe noticed there are almost no questions or problems asked here.

We don't favour Polish but you can't force people to use English as they 
don't speak or write English well.

Anyway I think it would be good idea to start security anouncment in 
English only.

Uhm... what I was thinking about recently, is to create a group of
users/developers who would start translating www.pld-linux.org into
English. For one person - it would probably be too much. But for more -
just a matter of time. And for our users, it would be an opportunity to
join in the development of PLD (it doesn't allways mean to work on
specs/sources). 

What do you think?

I think there should be some kind of automate. You submit security 
problem, some developers read and reply if it's patched or not. Than www 
page is generated.

It is  possible to  ganerate a mail  message from  our www
page. You  create a news  on www, and it  is automatically
send to security list.

after upgrade from ra 2 ac i have little problem with locale settings.
i want that "ls -l" show nice date in slovak format. here is my setup:

Oh, so it's just default behaviour of new ls version (for all locales).
For old behaviour you can use --time-style=locale:

$ LANG=sk_SK ls -l --time-style=locale
celkom 44
drwxrwxrwt  5 builder users    108 dec 16  2002 blah
-rw-------  1 builder users 581632 j?n 22 12:41 cca3uvXl.s

the most i'm missing are security announces and any news in english
language.
i don't understand polish and my english isn't best, so i'm not

If your English is not so good to write in it, you cat always prepare
translation of some PLD-specific resources into your favourite language
(rc-scripts, poldek, ...)

A moze powinnismy sie zdecydowac, czy logi maja byc %config czy %ghost ?
Bo na zazie jest miszmasz.

Hint: roznica taka, ze przy %ghost byluby usuwane bez zostawianie .rpmsave
po deinstalacji i nie bylyby tworzone .rpmnew przy upgrejdzie...

OOps, translation:

Maybe, we should take a decision whether the log files should be %config or
%ghost? We have mess, now.

Hint: %ghost files are removed during deinstalation without preserving
.rpmsave files, and .rpmnew files are not created during upgrade...

So we should probably apply this rule to all packages in distro ?

However, .rpmsave files are misleading sometimes (eg. for rotate scripts with
masks). Some triggers ?

Now it crashes. It used to hang before applying patches.
mono has broken "double fault" procedure - SEGV during SEGV exception
handling is handled in the same way, so it can loop forever (generating
megs of logs if signals are logged).

A jaki sens ma umieszczanie plikow logow w pakietach programow, ktore loguja
via syslog?
Bo o takich plikach chyba tu mowimy?

ukhm.. maybe better idea is don't have any logfiles in packages?
I've used to log all "in my own way" to one big file, and separate
/var/log/messages, /var/log/daemons etc are unnecessary for me.

(it's -en list)

general config from package, or from PLD?
If pld why don't change it?
Many program's authors wan't some changes with aren't compatybile with
PLD - in example directores not compatybile with FHS, optimalizations
other als -O2... we change it and standarize - why not change logs too
(when it's possible - program can log to syslog)

I'm not saying about files owners, but differences in logging itself:

1. syslog:

kern.*                                                  /var/log/kernel
*.info;mail.none;authpriv.none                          /var/log/messages
authpriv.*                                              /var/log/secure
mail.*                                                  /var/log/maillog
*.emerg                                                 *
uucp,news.crit                                          /var/log/spooler
daemon.alert                                            /var/log/alert

2. syslog-ng: see syslog-ng.conf. There are e.g. daemon, debug and
syslog log files...

destination syslog      { file("/var/log/syslog"); };
filter f_syslog         { not facility(authpriv, cron, lpr, mail, news); };
log { source(src); filter(f_syslog);    destination(syslog); };

So this:

# Syslog-ng configuration file, compatible with default PLD syslogd
# installation.

is not true.

In general - you're right, but we are not talking about that. We are 
talking about logs created by programs alone. Without syslog.
