If that worked as it should you wouldn't have conflicts but proper
obsoletes.

I'm not suggesting anything :-)
I just know i had kernel-build for 2 kernels installed at the same
moment without any conflicts (some recent 2.6). I remember changing
/usr/src/linux symlink for building modules for different kernels and i
dont use nodeps/force. So it seems it was ok.
