Modular X.org vs. patches

Currently our modular X server doesn't have all those patches from the 
monolith version and here lies the question -- should we start from scratch 
and add patches only as the need arises (and risk blowing stuff up from time 
to time) or maybe be extra carefull and just update all of our old patches 
and apply them just in case?
