In PLD there is one service for all display managers and it's called
display-manager.service. The preferences and priorities of it are
configured in /etc/X11/xinit/prefdm.

Whoever started these library updates, please finish them and fix/update
dependant packages.

If the time comes to move packages out of th-test, I will not hesitate
to remove packages that have broken deps and don't build. Even if it
will mean deleting e.g. entire KDE5/6.

Current state is at http://ep09.pld-linux.org/~pldth/main-ready-test.txt

Yes, I know some packages are beyond saving (from on top of my head
CEGUI, ogle, xsldbg).

gpgme, libconfig, libiscsi libsmb2, libnfs are mine, I'm back after
vacation break (+one shorter pending next week).

Regarding libnfs, I see the rebuilds were reverted, but AFAICS they
stick with using soname versioning in pkgconfig/cmakeConfig files, both
for autotools and cmake (there was a commit with project version change
to 6.0.x, but it has been reverted later). I don't see any open issue on
github related to this.

It got closed I think. The final is that package version is 6.x but 
pkgconfig version is 16.x ...

Also qemu doesn't support this libnfs version.

present. Not that it matters much but probably worth a cleanup at
convenient time.

when i try this command as suggested above I get this output
# systemctl enable display-manager.service
The unit files have no installation config (WantedBy=, RequiredBy=,
UpheldBy=,
Also=, or Alias= settings in the [Install] section, and DefaultInstance= for
template units). This means they are not meant to be enabled or disabled
using systemctl.

Possible reasons for having this kind of units are:
? A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's
  .wants/, .requires/, or .upholds/ directory.
? A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has
  a requirement dependency on it.
? A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer,
  D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...).
? In case of template units, the unit is meant to be enabled with some
  instance name specified.

upon reboot I am getting a plain display manager perhaps lxdm and not sddm
or lightdm

I am going something wrong perhaps

In th main, no. Big rebuild is happening in th-test and no moves to main 
until that's finished.
