The answer is "no, locking is *NOT* working".  Each and every time that
message happens, your mail file is in danger of being corrupted!

Old versions of Pine didn't warn you about the danger.  When you disabled that
message, you restored the old behavior of "put the mailbox in danger without
giving the user any warning".

The danger is not from other Pines; that part of locking works.  The danger is
from mail delivery (whatever program sendmail calls).  If mail is delivered
while Pine rewrites the mailbox, then either:
 1) the new mail will be lost
 2) the mailbox will be corrupted
 3) both (1) and (2) happen

The correct fix is:
	chmod 1777 /var/spool/mail
