Error while writing to shadow file

I get this error message after typing the command

# userdel <username>

Error while writing to the shadow file

The entry in /etc/passwd is removed, but the entry in /etc/shadow is not.

In my /etc/nsswitch.conf I have only files entries in passwd and shadow
sections. Glibc is 2.2-11.
