Też tak mam i też freshclam.log pusty ale pod wpływem twojego maila
zerknąłem na /etc/freshclam.conf i tamjest takie coś [fragmenty]:

Masz u siebie sysloga, bo ja nie... i uprawnień w odróżnieniu od ciebie
nie sprawdziłem (ważniejsze dla mnie było, że działa...)
