Seems like a good choice for me - when 2.6.17 / 2.6.18 will be ready
- afair zbyniu is still working on Xen - it could be released as an
update.

which reminds me to prepate the PECL stuff...

secure - yes - I try to monitor some of the security related lists
fresh - yes - but we would need to have some general guidelines of what
can be updated and what can not (like no sonames changes)

I'd prefer to release Ac and try to keep it uptodate - I believe for
most of us it will be a good platform for servers for some time - and
these people will be interested in fixing at least security bugs.
Probably the same applies for desktop stuff. At least it does in my case.
With Ac declared `stable', Th will probably gain some more audience, and
provided that some of the base packages will be somehow stable, its
development would probably boost.

That's why I am all for releasing Ac as fast as possible, so that it
doesn't necessary ends like Ra (outdated at release date).
Besides, I believe the situation is somehow better than in 2002, when Ra
was released - at that time Ac didn't actually exist. Th, at this time,
already has few thousands of packages and some group (small, but still)
of users.
