I've install PLD via floppy disk / net install
First I tried base and got stuck with many configs.
Then I tried KDE-base thinking everything will be done for me a-la
easy distros style.
I want to make this work ...

So far I managed to get the USB Harddrive working
but am seriously stuck with the Video

I have no Display showing up

Please let me know if there is something like Sax in PLD
so I can easily get X working

For KDE to work properly you need the kdebase-desktop package.
BTW which floppy disk were you using?

AFAIK there is no such thing like SaX in PLD but you can always use
xorgcfg or xorgconfig from the X11-setup package. Just type
poldek -i X11-setup
and then xorgcfg.

just need to add the USB mouse now
as that is not working :o

how to get USB External drive and hdb recognize on bootup?
will me editing fstab do?
also want PLD to remember to loadkeys uk
i am an intermediate Linux user

ie ex-Mandrake user (but not ex-Debian or ex-Slackware!)
so please bear with me - I dont know everything :D

modprobe usbhid
And set up /dev/input/mice as the mouse device in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Should work - didn't have the chance to test it because my mouse isn't
working on *any* Linux distro.

Adding proper modules to /etc/modules and an entry in fstab should do
the trick.

Look at /etc/sysconfig/console and the KEYTABLE variable (if you don't
have this file please install the kbd package with poldek)
Anyway - /etc/sysconfig is a good place to look into when new packages
are installed.

does poldek have a graphical mode?

the window-bar disappeared from my kde apps
so am thinking to  install things via poldek to fix the problem
but a graphical interface would stop me from having to log-out from X each time

so far PLD looks real good
but i need to fix some stuff to make it workable

any ideas?
i got a standard creative soundblaster system

Sometimes when it "hangs" pressing Ctrl-C helps.

also how do I set the path permanently so that i dont have to type in

Subject: make menuconfig doesn't work (?)

I've downloaded the source
and the tools necessary to recompile the kernel
that would be a way to get sound back

but on typing make mrproper 
make menuconfig I get a lot of errors

ending up with 
make[1]: *** [scripts/basic/fixdep] Error 1
make: *** [scripts_basic] Error 2

I was wondering what you guys do to compile the kernel

pls help.

but i will *need* to recompile the kernel sooner or later:

I work with :
win4lin and Vmware

and both require kernel recompilation
in the case of vmware it creates modules - no recompilation require

vmware as it stands is generating error when i run
vmware-config.pl

most likely due to kernel unfriendly to compile.

vmware
win4lin
nvidia
and evolution-1.4

are the most important thing for me for a distro
i like PLD i dont want to give up
but i also need those above for my job also

Too little input.
The real error messages are before the lines you have cited.

Generally to build kernel you must have binutils, gcc, glibc-devel and
ncurses-devel packages.

It won't work, even if it would build. Don't bother (unless you have
enough knowledge to fix the issue).
Win4Lin conflicts with some other feature from our kernel24, probably
grsecurity.
We've tested 2.4.26-1 built --with win4lin - such kernel booted, but
running win4lin caused whole machine to reboot.
Vanilla 2.4.26 with Win4Lin patches works.

Well, strictly speaking ncurses-devel isn't required to build kernel
- it's required only for menuconfig.

I've changed my email.

I had to uninstall PLD from the Dekstop because needed some stuff
working soon.

But I am installing PLD on my Toshiba Laptop.

As a way of contributing back I will try and write up any documentation
in English of all my findings and your advices.

So that any newcomer don't spam you with repeated questions :P

Again I believe in PLD 
- its a great nice/clean distro - but also believe it should be more
shared with the world ;)

My personal challenge would be to make PLD work with:

- Win4Lin
- Vmware
- Nvidia (which is ok)
- USB (scanner/printer/webcam)
- install Evolution-1.4

Your distro is more difficult than Gentoo.
But no Pain - no Gain!

Anyway I will be studying hard to solve on my own the issues above.
And document it accordingly.
