rpm question

I currently using Mandrake 7.2 linux.
I wanted to update an rpm, and looked
on www.rpmfind.net for it.  There was
no current Mandrake version, but you
did have one.  

My question is:  It is safe to 
install from your distro into a
Mandrake install, or are the files
going to be located in different
directories (much like a tar file),
leaving me with old-new versions?
