We spend some time on prepare our packages set as redy for allow correct
upgrade from RH to PLD (Provides/Obsoletes rules, bumped Epoch and
sometimes some triggers scripts) even without stopping system but all this
work is prepared (in mind) for complet move from RH not keep partial
upgrade so we can't guaranted it will work correct in all casaes partial
upgrade but yes .. in many cases some partial upgrade can be stable and 
usable.

For easer upgrade/move from RH I can recommend use poldek or apt tools as
rpm frontends.
