Hm, maybe "Invalid input" is more informative than "problem
detected", but recode changelog says:
2000-06-30  Bruno Haible  <haible at clisp.cons.org>
[...]
In case of unknown error, complain with RECODE_SYSTEM_ERROR,
not RECODE_INVALID_INPUT.

So the actual cause may be the same...
