It looks like the same bug is described here, but still open:

Bug description:
Metacity in version 2.28 or any older version available in TH falls into endless restart loop when is being replaced by another window manager. It starts to consume a lot of CPU and calls GConf2 which together with metacity do many IO calls.

Please find iostat when metacity is replaced. System has no running applications:
