well.. I'm affraid many packages will need changes to work with this 
automake. I had a situations with some macros few days ago working with 
SUSE (they seems use it) and this automake. Don't think it's the best 
time to change this tool right now.

Unfortunatelly autotools do not keep backward compatibility and we all 
know about it.
