on a slightly related topic:

kernel makefile supports two way of installing firmwares:
1. install what is needed based on enabled modules
2. install any firmware present in sources

how pld make install is invoked, it does "2", but imho should do "1".

also, what is the difference with firmware from kernel sources and the 
externally built one.
i have not found definitive answer to this.
