baggins, could you take care of the last remaining patches on 
dev-5.4.16. those are both yours and i don't know how to test are those 
still needed.


anyway, i finally installed the built version. the sasl2 error is 
probably from somewhere else.

something logs to syslog at this time:
Apr 24 12:48:27 new-server rpm: looking for plugins in '/usr/lib/sasl2', 
failed to open directory, error: No such file or directory
