Witam.
Jak zmusić MySQL'a do poprawnej zamiany literek na małe?

mysql> select LCASE('ĄĆĘŁŃÓŚŹŻ');
+--------------------+
| LCASE('ĄĆĘŁŃÓŚŹŻ') |
+--------------------+
| ĄćęŁńóŚŹŻ          |
+--------------------+

mysql> \s
--------------

Client characterset:    latin1
Server characterset:    latin1
...

Zrozumiałbym, gdyby żadnej litery z powyższych nie zamienił, ale dlaczego 
tylko niektóre?

I czy ta operacja jest bezpieczna?
Z mysql.info:
