By analogy to paper (books etc.). But paper doesn't emit any light, it
merely reflects it.

My mail client (mutt) has black background. Default background for web
pages was gray (IE changed it AFAIR - I wonder if it was ever defined in
HTML spec). And I can't think of any white desktop.
